Built in 1912, Harper Memorial Library has served multiple functions. Sitting at the south end of the main quadrangle at the University of Chicago, it currently houses the recently renovated Cathey Learning Center, graduate and undergraduate classrooms, and numerous faculty and staff offices. The distinguished National Register of Historical Places building celebrated its Centennial in 2012.

Following a thorough historic building condition survey using Industrial Rope Access Techniques per ASTM and OSHA Standards, ZS designed a remedial repair plan and provided onsite construction management. The scope included:

  • Selective exterior limestone replacement and tuckpointing of degraded mortar joints.
  • Decorative limestone turrent, finial, and gargoyle repairs.
  • Replacement of clay tile and membrane roofing systems including: historic copper accents, flashing details, and upgraded drainage systems.
  • Replacement of three large skylights.
  • Owner assistance services during the bidding process in accordance with University of Chicago procedures and requirements.
  • Full-time construction observation services, daily observation reports, and owner assistance throughout the construction process.
