University of Chicago selects ZS as the Building Enclosure Commissioning Agent for the David M. Rubenstein Forum

ZS was selected as the Building Enclosure Commissioning (BECx) Agent by the University of Chicago for the future David M. Rubenstein Forum. ZS will be working with the design/construction team, comprised of Diller Scofidio + Renfro Architects, Lera Consulting Structural Engineers, Primera Engineers, and Turner Construction. The 97,000-square-foot conference center is expected to break ground this year and be completed in 2019. The building will have a two story base with an eight story tower clad with Zinc Panels and glass curtain wall.

ZS’ prime role over the course of the project will be to ensure that the state-of-the-art building designs consistently meet building envelope performance standards for future maintenance and durability. ZS will be responsible for building envelope consulting during the design phase, mockup testing periods, ongoing field verifications throughout the full construction phase, and final pre-occupancy assessments.

New OSHA Rules for Working Surfaces and Fall Protection

As of January 2017, the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) began the enforcement of the updated the general industry Walking-Working Surfaces Rules and Regulations specific to fall hazards and the general industry Personal Protective Equipment standards that establish employer requirements for using personal fall protection systems. In November of 2017, the OSHA window washing anchor testing and certification requirement became enforceable. The new OSHA rules significantly affect existing buildings working surfaces and fall protection installations used for window washing and exterior/interior building maintenance activities.

ZS has extensive experience analyzing, designing, load testing, and certifying working surfaces and fall protection installations in accordance with OSHA rules and regulations. Please contact Ziad Salameh (zsalameh@zsllc-us.com) or Andy Martin (amartin@zsllc-us.com) for questions regarding how the new rules might affect your building.
